A member asked:

Explain why the first breath of a premature baby is the most difficult?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

GASP!: The first breath for any baby is the most difficult, not just premature babies. It's like that first blow into a balloon that is not yet expanded - the first one to open it up is hardest. The lungs are filled with fluid and never having been expanded before, make it tough to open. With preemies, it's even tougher because the muscles they breath with are not as developed, so they're not as strong.
