Many years: There are anecdotal stories all over the world of patients awakening from comas after 10 and even 20 years. The reality is that as time goes on, the likelihood of awakening from a coma decreases, and if a patient does regain consciousness after some prolonged period, the likelihood of normal function would be quite dismal.
