About 4hours: The blood level of a 50mg dose of atenolol will peak at after about 4 hours of administration. The effect on blood pressure is probably noticeable at about 1 hour after administration with hishges effect as the blood level peaks.

Soon: Atenolol will begin "working" within a few hours after taking the first dose, but its full effect will take 3-4 days. If your BP is not improved within 1-2 weeks, you may need a higher dose, a different medication, or a second medication. An appropriate goal is for your BP to be.
