Are there any other alternatives to tamoxifen for breast cancer?

Sometimes.: If you are taking tamoxifen for treatment of breast cancer and are post-menopausal, a class of drugs called aromatase inhibitors may be even more effective. If tamoxifen is being used for cancer prevention, Raloxifene (evista) is an effective alternative.

Aromatase inhibitor: Tamoxifen is used for women who are premenopausal and have an estrogen responsive tumor. Aromatase inhibitors are used for the same tumors in women who are in menopause.

Additional info: Also let me add additional alternatives if pre-menopausal 1) bilateral oophorectomy (surgical or radiation) 2) chemical oophorectomy (goserelin or gnrh agonist). If this were chosen your oncologist might recommend aromatase inhibitor therapy, although this is a controversial topic.
