Medication: It is important to differentiate lice and nits; nits are the empty egg cases attached to the hair shafts and contain no live lice if seen more than 1/8 inch from the scalp. These can be removed by soaking the hair in vinegar and combing with a fine-tooth comb. Actual lice can be killed by many of the otc and prescription pediculocides available. Read the directions on the label!

Also: Resistance has developed to several of the treatments that contain pediculocides like pyrethrins, permethrin, & lindane. Resistance varies in different areas, so check with your pediatrician to see what is working in your area. Some older products like lindane are no longer recommended because of their toxicity. Some of the new products contain novel non drug agents to overcome resistance issues.
