It depends...: The fontan operation for univentricular heart disease has a relatively low risk for early mortality (<10%) in experienced congenital heart centers, but all heart surgery incurs certain risks. Further, some patients have additional factors, such as the specific cardiac anatomy or extracardiac malformations, that place them at added risk for the fontan operation. Long-term risk is under evaluation.
