Get circulation : Get circulation to the foot and treat the infection and remove the affected area. If that does not work amputate to healthy tissue.

Ask the surgeon...: There are many causes for gangrene in the feet: diabetes, large vessel blockages, etc. The treatment depends on the diagnosis and the anatomy involved for the specific patient. Ask your mother's vascular surgeon to outline the treatment options for her. If you are dissatisfied, get a second opinion.

Gangrene Treatment: If it is in the early stages, then the foot can usually be salvaged, but time is of the essence. The first steps would include assessing the arterial ciruculation of the leg w/ ultrasound, ct scan, or MRI of the arteries. This helps to determine the best treatment approach. Most common therapy: catheterization w/ angioplasty or stenting or surgical bypass of diseases arteries causing the gangrene.
