Is grave's disease hereditary?

Sometimes.: People with relatives with thyroid problems are at higher risk to have thyroid problems themselves. But their problem may not be the same one their relative has. Auto-immunity (where the immune system attacks a person's own proteins) runs in families & causes most thyroid problems, including an enlarged thyroid (goiter), overactive thyroid (graves' disease), or underactive thyroid (hashimoto's).

Graves' disease: Because a family history of graves' disease is a known risk factor, there is likely a gene or genes that can make a person more susceptible to the disorder.
