Where is endometriosis located?

Pelvis, abdomen: Endometriosis is a serious problem in which little pieces of tissue (similar to the uterine lining that bleeds and sheds each month) are trapped inside one's pelvis and abdomen. Rarely, women may have tissue trapped in the chest or other places. With each menstrual period, the trapped tissue sheds and bleeds on the inside of the abdomen (the blood has no way to leave the body), causing much pain.

In the wrong place!: Normally, endometrial tissue is located inside the uterus, where it forms a lining that creates a safe environment for a fertilized egg to implant and grow. Endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue is located outside the uterus where it does not belong. This can be in the fallopian tubes, around the ovaries or on surfaces in the abdominal cavity (peritoneum).
