Unfortunately yes: Retinal detachment often disrupts the supply of blood to the retina. This can result in loss of pressure control, glaucoma and optic nerve damage. Rd surgery often involves a vitrectomy, removal of the vitreous humor from the eye. Optic nerve damage can result from such surgery. Caught and appropriately treated early, rd should not result in damage to the optic nerve.
