A 41-year-old member asked:

are generic drugs the same as name brand drugs?

Internal Medicine 35 years experience
Yes, but.....: Generic drugs are the same as the brand names, at least in the USA where their manufacture is carefully regulated. However, not every person will respond exactly the same to a brand vs a generic often due to differences in the manufacturing process, fillers, dyes and other factors, including some that might be how one perceives the two medications.
Dr. S. Smiley Thakur
Nephrology and Dialysis 31 years experience
~15%: To be approved by the fda, generic drug manufacturers only need to demonstrate that their product is between 85% and 115% effective as the brand name product. For most patients and physicians, this isn't a problem.
Dr. Alan Feldman

Although the above is true, problems occur when using medications that have a tight therapeutic range, such as thyroid hormone. If the generic dose is off by 15%, this is equivalent to a completely different dose of thyroid hormone (ie. 100 mcg vs 88 mcg). Hence people with no thyroid, or very little thyroid function should be on a brand name thyroid preparation, not generic.

A 21-year-old member asked:

Ive heard lots of different names for raynauds disease, phenomenon, syndrome are they all the same?

Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
Related & different: When a patient has raynaud's phenomenon (the symptom of vasospasm leading to poor circulation in the fingers and toes), his doctors will look for the common causes such as autoimmune disorders, drug side effects, hormonal imbalances, etc... If no medical condition is found that is causing the symptoms, then the disorder is called "primary". If a condition is found, then the disorder is "secondary".

Dr. Marcus Degraw

No: No. Overall, there's about 20 million new STD infections in the US every year. They range from HPV, that infects most people who are sexually active (80% plus by age 50 yr) down to HIV which causes about 45,000 new infections per yr in the US. Chlamydia, the most common bacterial STD causes at least 3 million infections per yr in the US.

Does MS always progress the same way?

4 doctor answers8 doctors weighed in
Dr. Virginia Simnad
Neurology 28 years experience
No: Ms disability progresses at a variable pace, influenced in part by age at symptoms onset, use of disease modifying therapy, effective use of rehabilitation strategies to optimize function. Genetic background also likely plays a key role in the aggressiveness of this disease. Cognitive reserve or "plasticity" of the CNS helps compensate for advancing disease longer.

Yes: The generic is simply a cheaper version of the brand name drug. Each version may be available in more than one dose level.
