Is it normal for a longterm contact lens wearer to have irritations with the lenses?

No: Irritation to your eyes signals that something is wrong. It could be a small tear in the lens, small scratch on your cornea, infection? But you should not ignore irritation. Take out your contacts and don't wear them for a few days. Then try them again. If the irritation is still there, you should get them checked. An ulceration could be occurring on your cornea and can lead to serious problems.
