Non allergic swells: HAE is a deficiency or dysfunction of C1 esterase inhibitor. It results in the unregulated release of "bradykinin" a potent vasodilator. 75% of pts have a family history and 25% have it based on a spontaneous mutation. Many v/effective treatments are now available directed at different points of the "cascade" leading to bradykinin release. Oral as opposed to injectable therapies are coming soon!
