Silver fillings ok: Replace fillings when they need to be replaced- not before. A new filling often removes more tooth enamel and can irritate the nerve in the tooth causing pain. Silver fillings are often the best value for your buck: it’s the strongest and longest lasting of the filling materials especially for larger fillings. Toothcolored fillings generally will not last as long as silver fillings.

Sometimes necessary: Removal of silver fillings is necessary only if they are defective or if there is additional decay.

Improvement, not fad: The newer materials are placed with adhesives. A tooth is rebuilt to its natural strength, flexibility and beauty using biomimetic techniques & materials that match the appearance of the enamel. Amalgam silver fillings do not strengthen the tooth from the inside. Rather they have different physical properties than the tooth, and leave it at greater risk of fracture. Not a fad but an improvement.
