How is loxapine different from the other schizophremia drugs?

Typical or Atypical?: Loxapine is generally considered a typical antipsychotic indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic schizophrenia. It was reported that this medication was more effective than other antipsychotics is treating the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Subsequent studies, such as cochrane database syst rev. 2007 oct 17;(4):cd001943 have shown that it is as effective but no better than others.

A class difference: There are generally two main classes of antipsychotic drugs: first and second generation. While it is generally true that there are no major differences in effectiveness between the two classes, second generation antipsychotics tend to have a less severe side-effect profile. This is especially true for a condition called tardive dyskinesia which is more common in first generation antipsychotics.

Loxapine/ Loxitane: Loxapine (Loxitane or Adavsuve) is a typical (older class) of typical antipsychotics which is used in the treatment of Schizophrenia. It was initially argued that it behaved much like the newer, typical class of antipsychotics but this does not appear to have been borne out.
