Part of cell surface: Ca125 is a component of mucin, mucous like material on the surface of cells that provides lubrication and is a barrier to foreign invaders. It is found on many different types of cells, including the female organs. It is shed from tumor cells in ovarian cancer, and therefore can be measured in blood as a tumor marker, but since ca125 is on many other kinds of cells, it is not specific.
