Some are MDs: In us the accupunctrists are mds with special training in ap.But there are therapists all over the world who are not trained in medicine and are only accupuncturists and no medical training.

Not all: Acupuncturists can be md's, do's or doctors of chinese medicine. There are many people who use acupucture traditionally. They are not physicians but are trained in acupuncture & treat their extended families within their homes. In china, peasants were trained in acupuncture & were calld "barefoot warriors". A lot of health care in china is by acupuncturists who don't have formal med training.
