Thrombocytosis: The most common cause of an elevated platelet count is iron deficiency anemia. Some people are born with thrombocytosis. Other causes include chronic infection or inflammation, metastatic cancer, and essential thrombocythemia, a bone marrow disorder which causes excessive production of platelets.
