Several: 1/ reduce bad cholesterol. 2/ reduce inflammatory reactions. 3/ reduce tone in arteries (help the artery to relax and permit better blood flow. I think has a role in healing of the injury cholesterol does to the artery.

To stabilize plaques: Statins reduce the build up of arterial plaques and reduce the inflammatory response on plaques.
