Dangerous Changes: Due the effects of self-imposed starvation, over time anorexia nervosa causes damage all major organ systems. The intestines, heart and kidneys can lose weight affecting function. As the heart loses size blood pressure lowers and heart rate slows causing permanent damage even fatal arrhythmias. Long term dehydration can lead to kidneys failure. Anorexia has the highest mortality rates.
