It may spread .: Most bladder infections do not spread but they certainly can. If the opening to the tube that ascends to the kidneys is leaking then bacteria can move up to the kidneys. This can result in total loss of function of 1 or even 2 kidneys. It is not unusual, especially in the elderly, for a UTI infection to spread to the blood causing extreme mental confusion and a listless state needing hospital.
