Inadequate hormones: The thyroid creates a hormone that regulates metabolism in the body. It works on a number of different organ systems, and is essential to proper body function. If the thyroid stops producing the hormone, you become hypothyroid. This can happen by antibody destruction, direct destruction of the thyroid gland, removal (tumor), or interruption of the stimulating signal from the brain.
