Pars defect: A new pars defect is very easy to see in an MRI because of the surrounding edema. An old pars defect my be easier to see in a cat scan because of sclerosis and other factors.

CT: Plain films show bone anatomy better than an MRI. A CT is the best study for evaluating a pars defect. Check out Spine-health.com (spondylolisthesis).

Pars defect can be very hard to see on MRI. I would believe the XR in your case. If further imaging is deemed necessary, then CT or SPECT/CT could be obtained and would be definitive.
