Meperidine - is it still used to stop migraines, or do people just use that nasal spray?

Narcotic pain med: Meperidine (demerol) is a narcotic pain med used to treat acute, postoperative, or sometimes chronic pain. Migraine pain may be treated with meperidine. This is not in the class of 'abortive' migraine meds designed to stop a migraine from coming on (such as Imitrex (sumatriptan) and other triptans). Meperidine may cause sedation and carries a risk of addiction but is effective for moderate pain.

Usually no: If migraines don't respond to over the counter drugs, doctors try to use migraine specific medications such as triptans such as imitrex, maxalt, relpax, (eletriptan) zomig, etc or dhe and use narcotics or butalbital combinations as rescue medication or if patients have contraindications to the other medications.
