A member asked:

What is the main difference between prilosec and nexium (esomeprazole)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not many: Both Nexium (esomeprazole) and Prilosec work the same way by binding to cells that produce acid thereby reducing the acid secreted in the stomach. You still make acid but just less. Nexium (esomeprazole) is effective for a longer period than Prilosec by a couple of hours. That is about the only difference. They are effective medications for about 12 – 14 hours in reducing the acid secreted in the stomach. That allows healing.
