Aristotle, Feynman..: "the most important...Sign of genius [is]... The intuitive perception of similarity in dissimilars"--aristotle "imagination, but imagination in a strait jacket"--feynman in other words: play with connections that others don't or dismiss; then lots of ruthless hard work to cut away the overgrowth.
