Excision is biopsy: Schwannomas tend to be small and often arise from nerves. They can be diagnosed based on history, physical exam and MRI with a high degree of confidence. An office biopsy of tumor arising from a nerve would be very painful. Recommended treatment is surgical excision. This treats the tumor and gives diagnosis. If it turns out to be cancer, which is very unlikely, more surgery may be required.

No: This type of tumor is frequently able to be completely resected. A biopsy may lead to risk to nerve function.
