Morphology: Follicular lesions of the thyroid may be difficult to classify based on a limited sample of fna. Even with biopsy specimens, follicular lesions are hard to separate into benign and malignant tumors. It is preferable for the pathologist to defer the diagnosis and wait for the genetic test results, if the distinction cannot be made on morphology alone.

All too often!: Sadly, indeterminate results can be up to 60%! should be <10%! search "quality improvement in thyroid fna" for articles. This due to the skill levels of individuals doing the biopsy, preparation and interpretation. Genetic tests may help but are often non-specific, expensive and take a long time. Ask ...It is fine to shop around for best performers. Patients have the right to demand high quality.
