Any age: Depending on the disorder, serious mental illness can occur from infancy through old age. Specific disorders often have a "window" of maximum vulnerability, e.g., autism with the very young and schizophrenia in late teens/early 20s. Others, like depression and anxiety, are spread out throughout the life course. Some may result from specific events, but many relate to brain development.
