Diet & exercise: Moderate exercise (about 30 minutes five times a week) reduces LDL cholesterol and raises HDL cholesterol. Smoking can lower HDL levels, so stop smoking if you do. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean sources of protein. Include monounsaturated fats in your diet- olive oil/canola oil. Moderate consumption of alcohol may also positively impact HDL levels. 1 glass of wine a day.

A healthy lifestyle and regular vigorous exercise 5 days per week has been shown to increase health and also increase the protective HDL cholesterol.

There are many ways to increase your HDL. Exercise is arguably the best method. However, many "drugs" can help, including Niacin (actually, vitamin B3) and alcohol, something we recommend only with great caution, and never in someone with a personal or family history of alcohol or substance abuse. Alcohol should be limited to 1 drink per day and Niacin to 1000 mg daily unless closely monitored.

Lifestyle change 1st: You should consider aerobic exercises, resistance training involving leg muscles, weight loss, smoking cessation, low saturated/trans fat, low simple carb, high monounsaturated fat, high fiber diet, and moderate alcohol consumption. You may want to talk to your doctor about Niacin (niaspan) and Fenofibrate (tricor or trilipix). If your LDL is high, consider crestor, (rosuvastatin) which may boost HDL slightly.
