Asthma & COPD: Byssinosis, brown lung disease, is asthma due to chronic breathing of raw cotton, flax, sisal & hemp dust. It affects textile workers employed in sweat shops & poorly-ventilated factories. Initially symptoms of asthma - coughing, wheezing, & shortness of breath respond to medications used to treat asthma, job change & tobacco avoidance. With continued exposure irreversible fibrosis occurs.
