What are the applications of an echocardiogram?

Cardiac function: The echocardiogram is an ultrasound evaluation of cardiac structure and function. It allows the cardiologist to examine chamber sizes, wall thickness, and contraction of the ventricles. It also shows the heart valves and whether they are narrowed or leak. The pericardium (sack around the heart) and great vessels (aorta, vena cava) are also visualized. Many heart diseases may be detected via this.

Heart functionality.: Cardiac echo allows your doctor to quantify the strength and function of your heart. It gives us information about size, flow, valve anatomy and detects abnormalities. It can also be used to detect clot in the event of an arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation.
