What are stem cells: Stem cell is undiffereciated cell of a multicellular organism, that is capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type. There are two broad tupe of stem cells.1 ebryonic stem cells which are isolated from inner cell mass of blastocysts2 adult stem cells which are found in various tissues. Embyonic stem cells can be used for any specialised cells, while adult cells act as repair sy.

Variety: Cells that have the ability to become adult cells of many types. Most researched in human apps are of adult origin (mostly fat, some bone marrow). They are multipotent, meaning can become cell types of various embryonic tissue types. Moral issues now limite use of embryonic types, making adult studies much closer to routine clinical uses.

Definition stem cell: All humans first start as a fertilized ovum, which is totipotent ("potential to become every cell"). After several days, it grows into an embryo, comprised of embryonic stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are still very unspecialized, and are described as being pluripotent ("potential to become a wide variety of cells"). Adult stem cells are multipotent ("a limited potential for differentiation"}.

VALUE of stem cells: my clinics were in some of the first multi center clinical trials for autologous stem cells ( your own stem cells ) in this country. THe value of these cells is beyond anything we have yet seen in medicine. Stem cells in adults are multipotent- meaning they can become several different tissue types. We have them constantly circulating at all times. We wouldn't live for an hour without them.
