What's the function of the aldosterone hormone?

Salt/Potassium balan: Aldosterone is a hormone that causes sodium retention by the kidney while excreting potassium and hydrogen ion. If one had too much aldosterone one would retain sodium, water and be low in potassium with a metabolic alkalosis.
