What are some common dental health problems that affect pregnancy?

Teeth and pregnancy: Common problems in pregnancy related to teeth are related to nutrition and vomiting as well. If the mother to be does not get enough calcium in her diet, the calcium needed for the baby comes from the teeth and her bones! grandma would say, " in old days a woman lost a tooth to every pregnancy"! also, if the mom to be is throwing up few times a day , the acid in hte emesis damages the enamel.

What to look for: Its best to make sure you visit your dentist prior to becoming pregnant to have any treatment completed before if possible. During pregnancy, acidity in the mouth from vomiting increases your risk for decay. Increased hormone levels can lead to inflammation of your gums which has been associated with preterm birth and low birth weight. Be sure to continue your dental cleanings when pregnant.

Premature Babies: A healthy mouth is essential for a healthy pregnancy. Diet and hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy may increase a woman’s risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Infections from tooth decay and gum disease can affect the health of a mother and her baby. Preliminary studies show that there may be an association between gum disease, and premature birth and low-birth weight babies.
