Why a physical examination for low back pain?

Required: When seeing a doctor for low back pain, an examination is needed. Such an examination includes at least an evaluation of gait, posture, testing for localized tenderness/deformity, reflex examination, lower extremity musculoskeletal evaluation, and a neurologic evaluation. Low back pain is a symptom, sometimes associated with other conditions, somtimes not spine related.

Compicated: The back is composed of a highly sophisticated integration of many different parts. You have discs, bones, joints, ligaments, nerves, muscles, other soft tissue. Bottom line is that for any given location of back pain, there can be multiple causes and thus the physical exam, in conjunction with a detailed history and possibly imaging studies are needed to evaluate the cause of the pain.
