Specializes in Surgery

No: People with diabetes, whether type 1 or type 2, need to meet the weight requirement for surgery as well. The bmi, which can be calculated from a combination of your height and weight, needs to over 35 in order to qualify.

Type 2 with obesity: Gastric bypass is ideal for nearly anyone with type 2 diabetes and obesity (bmi over 30: about 40 pounds overweight). The sleeve is also an option. Of course, insurance coverage is not consistent. Only 20% of working adults have coverage for bariatric surgery.
