Are cramps in early pregnancy normal?

Yes: As the uterus enlarges, cramping in early pregnancy is frequently due to spasm of ligaments which are attached to top of the uterus. It may occur when walking, getting up from sitting, and can be especially bad with sudden movement. The cramping from round ligaments is not associated with bleeding or pain that is severe and constant. As with any concerns, the patient should see her obstetrician.

Yes: Many women have cramping in early pregnancy. The uterus is a muscle and women will sometimes experience menstrual type cramping in early pregnancy. Ligament discomfort is also common as the uterus increases in size.
