A member asked:

What causes vitamin k deficiency in a baby?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Diet/ gut germs: Vitamins are something we need we can't make ourselves & for vitamin k there is a special step. Intestinal bacteria help convert ingested k precursors to the active form we need. Since newborns have no gut germs at the start, it takes a while to start the process. That is why babies get a v k shot at birth to bridge the ~ 8 days it takes for the process to kick in.
