Difficulty falling: asleep is often associated w/anxiety while waking up early and not returning to sleep is associated w/depression. Periodic waking is associated w/overall light sleep. Sleep hygiene: there are simple steps to improve sleep: avoid bright light exposure, avoid such distractions as telephone conversations, watching TV, computer monitor for at least 1 h b4 you plan to go to sleep. Ignoring sleep hygiene rules & developing maladaptive coping sleep pattern, can worsen the insomnia and make it chronic instead of passing, can turn the insomnia into even more serious problem
