Sometimes we don't: It is hard to tell the difference sometimes. Generally if you have depression in the first year after having a baby, we consider it postpartum depression. Treatment is pretty similar for both though: counseling and medications are options. Group therapy is really helpful in postpartum depression as well. Be sure to tell someone right away if you have any thoughts of hurting yourself.

Talk to doctors: It is not really important to distinguish between depression and pp depression. The important thing is to seek help. Pp depression is a serious problem and there are very effective treatment options available. Discuss your symptoms with your doctor. You do not have to live depressed. There is help available. The first step is to tell someone and let your doctor help.
