No and Yes: Superficial thrombophlebitis is not a dangerous problem, and is rarely serious, and essentially never fatal. Dvt, or deep vein thrombosis, on the other hand, is a very serious condition, and can lead to what is known as pulmonary embolus, where a piece of clot breaks off and travels through the heart to the lungs. In this circumstance it is very dangerous, and can be fatal.

DVT? Yes: If a DVT progresses to a pulmonary embolism (clot travelling to the lung) that can be fatal. Superficial thrombophlebitis is not fatal.
