PCOS: polycystic ovarian syndrome is a hormonal imbalance that occurs in some women because of ovarian dysfunction. It is usually manifested by male hormone characteristics in young females: scalp hair loss; facial hair, and acne, and irregular periods. Women with PCOS often have difficulty getting pregnant, and may be seen first by a skin doctor because of acne, and facial hair. See a hormone doctor.
