Depends: Most vertebral fractures can be treated conservatively, using a brace for 6 - 12 weeks to stabilize the spine. Compression type fractures can be treated surgically with cement stabilization (i.e. kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty) if the pain is intractable. Burst type fractures may need surgical decompression/stabilization if there is neurologic compromise or gross instability.
