Many causes: Hard stools, also called constipation, can be caused by many things. The most common reason in people who have had a procedure is narcotic pain medications like Percocet or Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen). Fiber and stool softener can help. It can also be related to changes in sleep, fluid intake, diet, stress, and dehydration. If you are breastfeeding, you almost certainly need to increase your fluid intake.
