Usually 6 mgs.: All medications, including xanax, (alprazolam) must be titrated for a particular patient. Six milligrams is the highest suggested daily dose. However, this may be too much for some individuals and not enough for others. Work with your doctor to find the right dose for you.

Xanax: The right dose should be no higher than your physician prescribed. Although the previous response was up to 6 mg per day - many would suggest a max of 4 mg per day in divided dose. Someone with anxiety might be started with 0.25 to 0.5 mg orally up to 3 times a day as needed for anxiety.
