I have a boxers fracture and the orthopedic surgeon said to put ice on it occasionally but cold hurts it worse. why does putting cold on it hurt?

Weight of ice?: ice shouldn't hurt. maybe weight of ice packs on fracture is painful. maybe you left ice on too long(20minutes max.)
