Other possibilities: Other possibilities include neck problems like arthritic spurs or disc problems causing impingement and/ or inflammation of the occipital nerve going from your neck to the back of your skull. Have you tried wearing a soft cervical collar,applying heat or cold applications, and,if you can take them,NSAIDS like ibuprofen? Perhaps a consultation with a neurologist who will order appropriate tests.

Try relaxn exercise : You may be clenching your jaw during your sleep. A dentist sometimes can tell if you're grinding ur teeth at night. For now I recommend you look up this topic online. There are many instructions on relaxation exercises for teeth grinding. Some involve conscious tensing of jaw muscles before going to sleep. May help in addition to meds

Most likely cause: If the pain is aching or bank like, not accompanied by nausea or vomiting, if not throbbing, if it is more of a moderate grade pain that doesn't interfere with your ability to function, it is more than likely a tension type. I am assuming you have had a CT scan or MRI.
