Newborn infection: A rectal temperature of 100.4 or higher is considered fever in an infant or child. Since the immune system of infants under the age of 2 months is still immature, infection is considered a medical emergency and usually involves invasive tests (spinal tap, blood tests), and at least 2 days of IV antibiotics in the hospital setting. Ask yourself if the risk of contracting an infection is worth it.

Cold and flu season: I discourage new parents from taking their new babies out and about during cold and flu season. Use your best judgement. If there are going to be other kids at the family gathering then coughing and sniffles are likely going to be there too increasing the risk of your baby catching an infection. If you decide to go, carry hand sanitizer insist any body who want to hold the baby clean their hands.

Should be OK: BUT-everyone should not be touching her. Anyone with the suggestion of a cold should keep their distance. Family member situation is more controlled than out in the public. Don't think there is much risk if they LOOK at the baby-not TOUCH!
