Sinus congestion : Do Steam nasal inhalations. Claritin is safe and so is nasal spray containing pseudo ephedrine. Drink plenty fluids. For cough use Dextromethorphan is an antitussive/cough preparation that seems to work by elevating the cough threshold in the brain. Watch the baby for drowsiness. Consult your Physician if condition lasts longer than a few days.

Protecting Baby: When you are sick, you and your baby will almost always benefit from continuing to breastfeed. Avoid multi-symptom meds with multiple active ingredients. Decongestants like Pseudoephedrine are safe although very small amounts can be passed to baby and may minimally decrease milk production. Use dextromethorphan for cough. Antihistamines can cause sedation in infant. Avoid use of aspirin.
